Wood Pellet Grills
If you are serious about getting real, wood fire taste from a simple, easy to use and affordable unit, then you may want to consider looking at a pellet grill. These grills are fueled by wood pellets (small pieces of hardwood that look like large pills) which burn cleanly and quickly to a fine ash because of their small size. These pellets are fed down from a storage hopper to a burn box at a controlled rate, adjustable based on high temperature (for grilling) to a lower temperature (for smoking). Because of the automated feed of the wood pellets, you can literally turn the unit on and be ready to grill in almost no time, giving you the convenience of a gas grill but with the added flavor of hardwood cooking. This automation especially great for smoking, as it allows you to smoke for hours in a temperature controlled environment with very little work from you!
Pellets
Wood pellets come in a wide range of “flavors” ranging from hickory, oak and mesquite, to more unique flavors such as cherry or apple. It is important to buy good quality pellets since cheaper, lower-quality pellets can jam up a pellet grill and cause your fire to go out.
Wood pellets typically burn at around 8,500 BTU per lb, which means:
- On high a pellet grill will consume about 2lbs of pellets per hour (this is the temperature you grill steaks and burgers at).
- When smoking, you can expect to consume about a 1/2lb of pellets per hour.
